Wścibscy sąsiedzi są wszędzie. Kobiety i mężczyźni. Najczęściej to osoby starsze lub niepracujące, bo te mają więcej czasu na obserwacje. Zainteresowanie życiem innych nie jest jednak zawsze związane z brakiem własnych zajęć czy nudą.

Ciekawski sąsiad wie, o której wychodzisz i wracasz z pracy, kto cię odwiedzał, czy posadziłaś nowe kwiaty w ogródku, czy w ostatnim czasie robiłaś jakiś remont albo kupiłaś nowe meble. Czasem może się wydawać, że nie opuszcza własnego mieszkania w obawie, że przegapi coś, co dzieje się w twoim.

Są dwa rodzaje wścibskich sąsiadów: bierni podglądacze i towarzyscy plotkarze.
