Context: As Carter Ratcliff explains in his catalogue text, the cutouts originated thanks to a rejected painting, Katz didn't like the background in the painting, so he decided to cut out the central figure and mount it on a plywood panel. Initially meant to be hung on the wall, the cutouts, in the next step, evolved into free-standing, flat "picture sculpures".
