English term or phrase: upper level support
When there is a large area of diverging air near the tropopause it is replaced by air rising from below. This causes a ground level pressure drop. A surface low begins to develop. Air begins to converge on this low. This can lead to cyclogenesis, the spinning up of a weather system. This usually results in large areas of stratus clouds blocking the sun and can lead to rain. If the divergence aloft is greater than the convergence at the surface then the low will intensify. This is referred to as upper level support.
Recognising what patterns in the upper troposphere are associated with convergence or divergence at that level is very instrumental for forecasting how weather might evolve at your flying site.
