Passes by Compensation and Discretion

Notwithstanding the normal Pass mark of 40, up to 40 credits worth of modules at a given Stage can be passed by Compensation, provided that these failing marks are all in the range 35-39. No modules can be passed by Compensation if more than 40 credits are failed, if there is any mark below 35, if any failed modules are Core, or if the overall Stage mean is less than 40.
The Board of Examiners has some further discretion to pass students with failing marks. It may, for example, pass students by Discretion on some narrowly failing marks, even when the conditions for Compensation are not met. Such cases are all considered individually.

Modules passed by Compensation or Discretion are treated as marks of 40 for the purpose of calculating Stage and Overall mean marks. Where modules have been passed by Compensation or Discretion, this will be noted on the student’s transcript.
