I agree that "ripple" is commoner than "wave," but it doesn't project quite the same image. A "ripple of laughter" is a gentle sound caused by only a few people laughing lightly; a "wave of laughter" indicates lots of people laughing heartily. A comedian who gets a wave of laughter from the audience has succeeded. One who gets only a ripple is a failure.
