English term or phrase: retractable aircraft ski
According to Maori mythology, Mount Cook and the Southern Alps in New Zealand are the off-spring of the sky father and earth mother, who were turned to stone during a visit to earth.

Certainly, the result is a spectacular landscape which inspired Harry Wiggly to develop the world’s first retractable aircraft ski, which he then used to make the very first landing on the Tasman Glacier in 1955.

Today, it’s the modern ski planes which provide passenger and aviator alike with this experience, which is unlike any other.
