4.2.2. Effect of metal ion
In recent years, Fe3+ has been found to possess the ability to
enhance the biodegradation/decomposition of pollutants. During
the anaerobic reduction of azo dyes by Shewanella decolorationis
S12, which is linked to cell membrane electron transport [39], the
decolorization efficiency was significantly influenced by Fe3+. The
decolorization efficiency of azo dye was increased by about 30%
after addition of 6mM Fe3+ [39]. In our laboratory, an organotin
decomposition factor pyochelin (PCH) secreted by P. aeruginosa
CGMCC1.860 even in the presence of 100 MFe3+ was purified [40].
Interestingly, the decomposition of triphenyltin (TPT) by purified
PCH can be greatly enhanced by Fe3+, Zn2+, Co2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+.
The decomposition rate of TPT by FePCH was 3.4-fold higher than
that of PCH alone after a 12 h reaction. During the decomposition of
TPT by FePCH, formation ofHO• was detected by electron paramagnetic
resonance (EPR) and probed with benzoic acid
. The formation
of HO• was also confirmed as the mechanism of enhancement of
TPT decomposition by Fe3+. Using NMR and ESI-MS/MS, the existence
of TPT–FePCH ternary complex in the reaction mixture was
suggested. These results indicate that Fe3+ could enhance organotin
decomposition by PCH and that the formation of HO• and
an organotin–PCH–iron ternary complex was the reason for this
augmentation by Fe3+ [3].

Two different methods were used to detect HO·. Spin trapping of HO· in
EPR spectra in the presence of FePCH indicated that HO· was produced, while HO· formation was not observed in the absence of FePCH (Fig. (Fig.2).2). When benzoic acid was used to probe HO· in the presence of FePCH (17), the production of p-HBA was detected by HPLC (Fig. (Fig.3),3), which is the reaction product of HO· with benzoic acid (BA) as reported previously..
