Antes de iniciar la peregrinación, confiaban los bienes a un monasterio cuyo abad entregaba al peregrino el bordón, la calabaza, el rosario y la escarcela. El viaje duraría el tiempo que el peregrino deseara. Para fomentar los viajes estaban exentos del pago de peajes, portazgos, pontazgos y cubiertos de la rapacidad de alcaldes, señores, mesoneros y ladrones.
