I should think that the choice between the two suggestions 'magos/hechiceros' would depend on the time period covered in the source text. 'Mago' is based on the Persian word for ancient scientists/healers/historians/astrologers in the noble courts of that region, which came to Europe through mention in the Nativity story of the Bible and wasn't adopted in European languages until relatively late in our history. If the source reference is to a time before 1300 a.d. then I would prefer to see a translation like 'hechicero' (same functions according to the cultures of Europe) or something more specific to an actual culture in question, such as 'druida' for Celtic courts. |
