Explanation:
In most conexts - and especially if it's clear that it refers to football (as seems to be case here) 'team' could be omitted from the English text (which doesn't sound at all natural with 'team' included) and also from the Spanish.

Then you can concentrate on finding a nice way to translate 'thrashed' (or 'defeated' as your author puts it...).

If you insist on including something for 'team', then Arrigo's 'selección' is the best term, since it reflects the fact that national team members are 'selected' on a case-by-case basis from the country's club teams for the purposes of a specific game or tournament, and do not form a permanent 'equipo' as such.
