English term or phrase: settled New Orleans as a direct threat to
France’s invasion of Florida in 1564 caused Spain to settle there, fight a bloody campaign and stay to prevent new incursions. St. Augustine was burned twice by the English and besieged a third time. France settled New Orleans as a direct threat to the Gulf coast which resulted in Spanish colonies at Pensacola, Mobile and Texas. Cuba fell to the English in the French and Indian War and Florida was traded to England for Cuba’s return.

Comprendo lo que dice, pero no me gusta lo que se me ocurre. No me gusta la traducción literal "amenaza directa". Creo que en este caso Francia quería intimidar a los demás en el Golfo. Mil gracias de antemano.

Francia colonizó Nueva Orleans como amenaza directa
Explanation:
Whatever the choice of words for 'threat', the translation must include a reference to the fact that the French 'settled' (colonizaron) New Orleans (1781).

As for 'threat', history suggests that 'amenaza' is pretty close to the truth.

Tu versión me parece buena. Como yo lo entendí, Francia utilizó Nueva Orleans para amenazar directamente a la costa del Golfo.
