  -> In this case, I believe that it needs a freer translation. It is merely an optional translation, FVS. As for freer translation, I meant something akin to transcreation. But, it is only an opinion, nothing else.

Explanation:
... especialmente a partir del siglo X.

Depends on just how much emphasis is being put on the act of becoming. Otherwise, Ximena and FVS have the only other answers that seem to take that "becoming" into account to one degree or another. If the original source is actually negating that such WAS the case until about the 10th century, then "becoming" is pretty important and needs to be emphasized.
