Esta parte del texto es la entrevista a una de las esposas de los militares que formaron parte del estudio.

“I just wanted to get it finished. I had it planned so if I needed to pack up and go to Tennessee and be an army wife the real way, that part of my business was already taken care of. And he told me,” she pauses, swallowing, “that he was safe, in an office, doing communications type stuff, so my mind wasn’t thinking, you know, about what he actually was doing. I didn’t see him as in danger. I guess in my mind I was thinking he’s in this thick underground building, milling away.”

Me parece "milling away" se refiere a pelear o destruir. Pense en "moler", pero es un termino que quizás sea difícil de entender. El publico de mi traducción son personas hispanohablantes profesionales de la salud o familiares de veteranos.

Creo que simplemente quiere decir que estaba trabajando en las "comunicaciones", como le había platicado. No me parece que tenga que ver con pelear ni mucho menos destruir.

Quizá resulte más adelante que de hecho sí estaba peleando y destruyendo, pero a distancia, o sea mandando los ataques de "drones", no sé.

Para mí, "milling away" es sinónimo de algo como "busily working".
