Hydrocarbon enters at the top of the vessel, through a slotted distributor, passes downward through the sand bed, through the support grid, and turns before exiting from the side of the vessel, below the sand support grid.

The hydrocarbon outlet is protected by a special chordal baffle permitting the coalesced aqueous phase to run down the walls and collect at the bottom of the vessel.
