Valves with rotary drive mechanisms

It is not uncommon for rotary drive mechanisms on gate valves (both
on manually actuated valves and as the override mechanism on a
hydraulically actuated valve) to seize up – usually due to galling of the
threads over several operations which, in some cases, can be as little as
two or three cycles.
Valves involving rotary drives should be exercised as few times as possible.
In situations where the valve is being opened but the full number of turns
is not achieved for some reason, serious consideration should be given
to leaving the valve as is, i.e. partially open, if at all practicable (taking
into consideration pig passage, pressure drop across the gate, and the
likelihood of erosion).
For some inexplicable reason, it is also not uncommon for the various
acceptable torque values for such valves to be misquoted in the Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) documentation. Therefore all torque
values (as well as the number and direction of turns required for valve
actuation) should be reconfirmed directly with the OEM as part of the
intervention planning process.
Given these issues, it is also essential to confirm that the torque tool to be
used to operate the valve is properly and accurately calibrated before each
such operation.
Any hydrates in a valve should be removed prior to attempting to override
the valve.
