English term or phrase: reversed
So what of the observed oscillations (measured by examining the magnetism of the rocks buried in sediments on the earth’s surface)? Humphreys has shown conclusively that the energy (as against the magnetic moment) of the earth’s magnetic field has certainly decayed by as much as 14% since the 1829 measurements but that the dipole moment could well have ***reversed*** in the past. This is by no means inconsistent, and points strongly towards a freely decaying magnetic field which was severely distorted (possibly by a collision).
