Hola a todos,
estoy haciendo un ejercicio de traducción con una obra breve de Harold Pinter llamada "Request Stop" pero me asalta una duda cuando la protagonista dice "Peruvian" al otro personaje al que increpa, pues antes ha hablado de "gente de campo que vienen a la ciudad en busca de juerga" y no me cuadra que luego especifique que se trata de un peruano, aunque sí es verdad que anteriormente también ha hablado de "extranjeros". Alguien puede arrojar un poco de luz al asunto? Se usaba en los 50 el término para denominar a alguien de campo? O se trata simplemente de una mezcla de conceptos de la protagonista?

Aquí va un fragmento de la obra:

Ask a man a civil question he treats you like a threepenny bit. (To him) I’ve got better
things to do, my lad, I can assure you. I’m not going to stand here and be insulted on
the public highway. Anyone can tell you’re a foreigner. I was born just round the
30 corner. Anyone can tell you’re just up from the country for a bit of a lark. I know your
sort.

(Pause. She goes to a LADY)

Excuse me, lady. I’m thinking of taking this man up to the magistrate’s court, you heard
him make that crack, would you like to be a witness?

(The LADY steps into the road).

LADY. Taxi…

WOMAN. We know what sort she is. (Back to position). I was first in this queue.

(Pause)

Born just round the corner. Born and bred. These people from the country haven’t the
40 faintest idea of how to behave. Peruvians. You’re bloody lucky I don’t put you on a
charge. You ask a straightforward question —

Le pedí ayuda a mi esposo británico quien me apuntó en la dirección correcta. Él me hizo notar que "threepenny bit" es cockney rhyming slang, por lo que pensó que tal vez "Peruvian" era slang también. Buscamos y encontramos la siguiente referencia:

Ahí dice lo siguiente:

"... I feel like a real Peruvian here."
He had to explain to them that "Peruvian" was the East End London slang term for a newcomer.
