Se refiere a que les están tirando piedras desde ambos lados, y lo compara con el viejo castigo militar de "running the gauntlet" (se prefiere "gantlet" en inglés americano): la "carrera de baquetas". Se emplea también en ambos idiomas en sentido metafórico.
