There are four types of lashing:

Frictional lashing (tie-down lashing or loop lashing)
This is used when the load is pressed to load the bed. Possible movement of the load is prevented by tie-down force and friction.

Tie-down lashing always requires edge protection, especially when sharp edges threaten to cut or tear the lashing device.

Direct lashing

Direct or diagonal lashing is used when the vehicle body and the single cargo pieces are equipped with fixing or attachment points.

Pairs of lashings are fixed at attachment points on the load and the attachment points on the vehicle. One lashing should always have an opposing lashing.

Webbing lashing

Webbing lashing is used to tie down cargo items in order to fixate them on the transport unit’s floor. Since tying down is a way of frictional lashing, it is often used in combination with other means of load securement.

Chain lashing

Chain lashing with hooks and tensioners are fixed at lifting and lashing points.

Another way to tie down cargo items is to make use of nets and tarpaulins, which usually cover the whole cargo item, thus providing slightly more security. Bars, on the other hand, are used to prevent forward or backward movement of a cargo item.
