English term or phrase: work lead
In IATE the translation of work lead is "återledare" which I understand as "neutralledaren"/"nollan".

Bosse Johansson from Elsäkerhetsverket reinforce that: "neutralledaren är en återledare"
in
"Fasledaren leder strömmen till någon apparat som förbrukar ström, neutralledaren är en återledare, man får en krets genom apparaten när strömbrytaren sluts eller stickproppen stoppas i vägguttaget. Jordledaren är till för att förbinda apparatens hölje med jord. Den gör så att säkringen löser ut om ett fel uppstår mellan strömkretsen och hölje."

In IATE "work lead" seems to be synonym to "earth lead" and "ground lead".
I have found a definitopn of "work lead" (metallurgy) on Freedictionary.com:
"The electrical conductor connecting the source of current to the work in arc welding. Also known as ground lead; welding ground."

However, in my translation "work lead" is found in the following sentence: "Do not mistake the work lead for a ground cable."

It can thus be undertood as don't mistake a ground lead for a ground cable – because they don't function the same way.
I would say that in the following below the "ground cable [jordkabel]" correspond to "riktig skyddsjord".
"En jordledning har en helt annan funktion. Den skall säkerställa att ett apparathölje INTE kan få någon farlig potentialskillnad gentemot övriga jordade föremål i omgivningen. Ett "solitt" jordfel i apparaten resulterar normalt i att nätsäkringen löser ut om apparaten har riktig skyddsjord (https://www.nyteknik.se/opinion/skillnad-pa-jordfelsbrytare-..."

I doubt that "återledare" is the right translation and I usually trust IATE.

My question: Is "jordledare" the right translation of "work lead" in my translation "Do not mistake the work lead for a ground cable."

Dear Catrine,
I understand your text is about welding equipment. Such device has two separate voltage circuits: 1) the mains supply, and 2) the welding voltage. The circuits are separated in the until, normally with a full transformer.
The mains supply consists of the phase (fas), return (nolla) and ground (slyddsjord). This ground is connected the unit's covers and acts as a protection in case of an isolation fault in the unit.
The work lead is the cable that connects the welding unit to the work piece. On the workplaces you will hear the guys call it "jordledning" which it is not. A more correct name would be "returledning". The other cable is the "gun cable" between the welding unit at the welding gun. The two latter cable carry the welding current through the work piece.
The mains ground must NEVER be connected to the welding return line. In case of an isolation fault in the unit the welding cables would the carry the mains voltage which can result in electric chock and death.

Thank you again Lars!

Your explanation was splendid, and I know that it is right because there are many texts describing the same thing, but you also gave the right translations into Swedish.

In my welding text, the work return lead must be the same lead as the work lead between the welding unit and the work piece. I think "arbetets returledare" will be proper for "work return lead" then.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for answering Lars! But I still wonder why work lead is synonym with ground lead and earth lead in English, if the translation into Swedish is återledare. Since återledare in Swedish means neutral ledare. I think that it might be right to translate Don't mix the "work lead" with the "ground lead" to Förväxla inte jordledningen med jordkabeln. Then I interprete "En jordledning har en helt annan funktion. Den skall säkerställa att ett apparathölje INTE kan få någon farlig potentialskillnad gentemot övriga jordade föremål i omgivningen" as it is necessary that the welding work piece is grounded with the work lead because the weld burner its connected appliances are grounded (with the ground cable). Can my doubts be explained?
