clinostat کشش ثقل پیما، نشیب پیما Explanation: The description given by Mr. Samargawad gives an appropriate explanation but the proposed Urdu word for this device does not represent what is meant in the description and, IMO, is far from the meanings given in different resources for the word 'Clinostat' or 'Clinometer'. The word 'میلان' means 'inclination', 'trend' etc. which does not represent the functions of this device. |

clinostat کیفیت بقاء Explanation: The term میلان is indeed given by a reputable institute but unfortunately it does not convey the meaning. Reader can easily misinterpret it in terms of other words i.e. Inclination, tendency because it is widely used in Urdu in those meanings. So my suggestion is کیفیت بقاء which is not only proper translation of the term clinostat but also conveys the meaning perfectly. Clinostat is the combination of two words Incline + state which means any instrument that tries to maintain the state of something. کیفیت بقاء is also combination of two words کیفیت means state and بقاء means to survive, to maintain (existence or a particular state). So کیفیت بقاء means something that tries to maintain a particular state. In my opinion this is the best That Urdu can offer for Clinostat |

clinostat کلینواسٹیٹ | افزائش پیما Explanation: اگر متن میں اصطلاحی لفظ استعمال کرنا مناسب ہو تو آلہ کا اصل نام کلینواسٹیٹ استعمال کیا جاسکتا ہے اور متبادل طور پر بطور اُردو اصطلاح "افزائش پیما" متعارف کیا جاسکتا ہے۔ -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2013-12-11 14:58:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- پیمانہ | پیمائش | پیماء used for Standard Meter | Measurement | Meter افزاء | افزائش | نشونما used in sense of growth Whereas "clinostat" is a noun - name of a specific meter. You need to find out whether this meter is used in indo-pak agriculture or not, if yes, then what its common name in indo-pak local languages, if there is then whether that word or so called term is defined in any Urdu or Dictionary of any local language or not. If the term requester is looking for equivalent or closest Urdu word, then he has to accept and adopt the most helping words defining what "clinostat" is, otherwise the asker should use his own "explanation" as it already most convenient for him. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day16 hrs (2013-12-13 02:12:55 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I understand, all linguist are here to suggest according to the best of their knowledge and logic but not authorise to create or impose subjective theories. Majority of us agrees that میلان (milaan) does not seems a simple or a comprehensive choice for "clinostat" even for Urdu translators, and specially for the common audience who are most respected. I agree nor recomend that more typical and indefinate compound terms such as آلہ بقاء زاویہ، آلہ بقائے زاویہ، آلہ زاویہ قرار، آلہ مستقل میلان، آلہ استقلال میلان may helpful for the respective audience. |

clinostat آلہ بقاء زاویہ، آلہ بقائے زاویہ، آلہ زاویہ قرار، آلہ مستقل میلان، آلہ استقلال میلان Explanation: A very interesting and challenging term. Per Altafi Zaki sahib's suggestion, I would include the transliteration of the English term in brackets so user can look it up to see what it actually is. I was also inclined to use the word پیما because of the description given, but taking Ikram sahib's lead I started reading about it. The device itself does not measure anything. It simply offers a spinning surface where potted plants are rotated at preset angle/s at preset speed. Here are some images: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=clinostat image&qpvt=cli... Since the aspect of 'inclination' is built into the term, I've attempted some new suggestions. I would also suggest using آلہ in whatever term is used because in English the "-stat" ending indicates that the term is name of a device which is used to maintain the condition/element this suffixes follows. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/stat?s=t "-stat : a combining form used in the names of devices that stabilize or make constant what is specified by the initial element: thermostat; rheostat." So a comprehensive Urdu term should specify three things: 1. This is an instrument/device 2. It is maintaining or keeping constant a condition 3. The element/condition that is being kept constant/maintained -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 days (2013-12-16 14:34:41 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Special thanks to M. Ikram sahib. It was his answer and explanation that got me thinking and researching the term. |
