I didn't think anybody over the age of seven claimed to have a favourite colour! At least, not in a blanket sense of applying to everything; of course, we might all have colours we like best for decorating our homes or wearing - though they may be subject to change.

Yes, I see what you mean; in this case the question wasn't very clear, and it's fair enough to make sure you know what the asker wants before answering.

I just wanted to reassure Salam that he hadn't done anything wrong! We do sometimes get questions in which someone provides a correct answer in the discussion area (some colleagues are particularly prone to do this) and then everyone else feels inhibited about posting an answer in the answer box, so no answer is ever posted. I value our prevailing culture of etiquette and respect for priority, but I think it can be taken too far!

I was hoping that the Asker would have provided clarification, with a view to establishing what it was they were actually trying to say/ask. I view it as 2 different, but related questions. Personally, Charles it doesn't matter to me who answers the question (although Salam has pretty much said what I had already stated). I hope I have not misinterpreted. Regards.

and with no implied criticism of Taña (as I am sure she will understand), it is really better to answer in the answer box rather than the discussion area. The discussion area is for clarifying the question. Having said that, I freely admit that I sometimes answer in the discussion area myself!

You will have to explain a little more, but as I see it, you are asking two different questions. One is "What", and the second, a follow-on, if you will, is "Why". If you wish to know "why", you need to include the word "it" (after identifying your favorite color). So, in summary, the first question one should ask is "what is your favo(u)rite colo(u)r?". Fristly, the sequence of questions would be: 1) "what is your favo(u)rite colo(u)r?"; and then 2) "why is it your favorite color?".
