non-porous, solid
Explanation:
I agree with Tony's comments.

so bulk samples are samples done with bulk/solid pure aluminum, or bulk/solid aluminum 6061 alloy

as opposed to foam samples done with "foam made from bulk aluminum 6101 alloy".
which are porous, so fluid can pass through quite easily

chips

Explanation:
It may refer to aluminum chips, rather than aluminum sheets or other processed form, which you can count piece by piece (like 2 sheets). Well, chips can be counted piece by piece but I think they are usually counted by weight.

neutral  Tony M: I think that is the wrong sense of 'bulk' here, I believe it means 'masse', i.e. 'solid'. This would be consistent with the techniques being described. / seems to me that would contrast better with the 'foam' technique, don't you think?
