I think you'll find here that 'stage' refers in fact to the 'stage' or 'arena' where things happen — the term 'main stage' is often used in events like music festivals etc. In the games context, I would imagine it refers to two different types of screen presentation: the main one in which you actually play the game, with interactive content, and then a subsidiary one with no interactivity that simply explains the unfolding of the story. I've seen this style used in a few games. |
