Geography / French translation of US place name
English term or phrase: District of Columbia
As a freelance proofreader, I have been presented with two different French translations of the term above: specifically, District de Colombia and District de Columbia. My research indicates that the spelling Columbia is correct or at least preferred. I believe Colombia is an error, originating with the translation of the country name Colombia as Colombie. Please confirm or correct my understanding.

Thanks
Alex Jenkins

Notes to answerer
Asker: Jenni, if this is a repeat message, please forgive me. I switched to another screen to check a spelling. First, I want to thank you for your prompt and welcome response. I hope it will help me win the day. French at times is a mystery to me. In this case, I am somewhat puzzled that Columbia is the preferred spelling for the US capital city's location, while the Canadian province of British Columbia is translated as Colombie-Britannique.

-> Thanks, Taña. Believe it or not, this error sometimes cropped up in documents prepared by the foundation focused on the Americas that I worked for in Washington before I came to Spain. Sometimes the spellchecker of Word is the culprit.
