English term or phrase: Mean thickness or average thickness?
In describing the thicknesses of strata in a geological survey, is it correct to refer to "mean thickness" or "average thickness"? (In the Russian text I am translating, the Russian word could mean either, but in English, "average" is not always the same as "mean".)

Selected answer:average
Explanation:
I would say that "mean" is more exact notion, meaning some rule of calculating the number, like arithmetical mean, etc.

In Russian, the difference is between "средняя" (less exact) and "усреднённая толщина" (more exact, implying a strict mathematical method of calculating the mean value).

I may be wrong, but I believe "average" sounds more common and everyday, while "mean" is more `mathematical'. The same is for the Russian words I mentioned above.

I've found many examples of both in Google, so I think either would do, but I think that in general, you are right. Thanks to you & other answerers.

Some Samples
Bulletin - State of Illinois, State Geological Survey
"In Bond county the average thickness for deep drilling is 1830 feet"
The Lower Manhattan Plan
"Average thickness of Sand Gravel above bedrock surface - 6 feet:;
Average thickness of Strata to be dredged - 20 feet"
Bulletin - Illinois State Geological Survey
"In 142 drill records within the quadrangle the surficial materials have an average thickness of about 40 feet. These deposits are thin over the upland areas, that constituted the higher lands during the late pre-glacial time"

Some other examples:
-average thickness of Quaternary sediment
-average thickness of mixed layers in pelagic deposits
-Natural History's standard geological column, which is supposed to represent the average thickness around the world, shows 136,200 metres!

Notes to answerer
Asker: On the other hand, put: geological survey mean thickness into Google and you'll get plenty of examples of "mean" too.
