English term or phrase: Conscripted Teachers
If you are 18 years old, you should do a conscription/military service. Now, Instead of serving the military for two years, you can do a teaching job for five years. What is the best term for this concept ("those who are doing a teaching job instead of serving the military)? Shall we call them Conscripted Teachers"?

Selected answer:teaching as an alternative to military service
Explanation:
You haven't given the context, so you may have to tweak this. But "conscripted teachers" doesn't work in my opinion because it implies they've been forced to work as teachers.

neutral  Daryo: they are not forced to work as teacher, but if it's an alternative to being forced into serving in the military, it's not exactly a "free choice" either?

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): Without context it's hard to see but most likely there is still an element of choice in what and where to teach. 'Conscripted teachters' would mean teachers who are conscripted to do military service but here it is exactly the opposite.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: Yes, teaching is one way(option) for avoiding being drafted into the military. And no, "conscripted teachers" doesn't work

agree  Katalin Horváth McClure: I think "teaching as alternative civilian service" is better, as "alternative civilian service" is the phrase describing civil services performed in lieu of compulsory military service. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_civilian_service
