  -> Thanks, Charles! I was always pretty dim at maths, barely scraped through my A-level; but I couldn't at first sight see the relevance here, but hey, it does seem to be the term they use, we don't need to worry here about WHY? ;-)
agree  Terry Richards: Tangent means "touching". The tangent here is a plane that "sits" on the highest points of the ground. It's an arbitary ground reference level.
