English term or phrase: ground of the universe
Dear colleagues,
I'm not sure about the meaning of "ground of the universe" in the following passage.
Thank you in advance for your help!

***

Physicists also refer to this notion of a probability space that contains all that might arise as the quantum vacuum . It’s important to recall that for some scientists, this vacuum is not energy itself; it is where energy comes from . In other words, the sea of potential, the quantum vacuum is not energy; *** it’s just the ground of the universe *** or the mathematical space of all possibilities from which energy arises.

the ground state or zero-point energy of the universe (quantum vacuum)
Explanation:
I think there's no point in translating this into everyday terms because it refers to a concept completely alien to everyday experience and thinking. "Ground" here means "ground state", and it refers to what is left when everything, all particles, antiparticles, radiation, gravitational waves, are taken away and nothing is left. The thing is that this "ground state", a quantum vacuum, is not literally nothing; there is something there, a minimal level of energy. This is the ground state energy of the universe.

The ground of the universe here means this ground state energy, which is another term for zero point energy.

"A common way to look at this state is to call it the quantum vacuum. It's the lowest-energy state of empty space, and yet one of the puzzling things that quantum physics teaches us is that the zero-point energy, or the ground state of the Universe, isn't actually a state of zero energy."

"Zero-point energy (ZPE) is the difference between the lowest possible energy that a quantum mechanical system may have, and the classical minimum energy of the system. [...]
The term zero-point energy (ZPE) is a translation from the German Nullpunktsenergie. The terms zero-point radiation or ground state energy are also sometimes used interchangeably. "

In Italian it's energia di punto zero. Perhaps (assuming you have to express this in Italian) the following may help:

"Il vuoto in meccanica quantistica è sempre definito come lo stato di minima energia (o ground state) di un sistema fisico"

It doesn't really mean basis in the sense of foundation. "Base state", in the sense of "minimal state", would be more accurate.

That's how I see it - it's an unusual choice of word.
