I think readers would reckon they were guessing, at least to some extent, when they assumed "seawear" to be deck shoes, striped navy-blue tops and sou'westers.

I don't think it's really a question of being grammatically correct or incorrect. It's a perfectly well-formed word that could exist in principle — there are plenty of similar words ending in -wear — but simply doesn't. As Terry says, I think a native speaker would understand it to mean clothing worn at sea, rather than on the beach. There are words native speakers use that other native speakers don't like or regard as incorrect, but this is a word that is simply not used at all. It's difficult to provide evidence of this, since the evidence is negative.

there's just one word. It's more common to see 'beachwear', 'swimwear', 'wetsuits', etc.
