Finnish to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - IT (Information Technology)
Finnish term or phrase: kolliaineisto
The context doesn't really help, but here it is anyway:
"Palvelu tarkistaa onko tiedosto oikeata tyyppi (kolliaineisto). "

Obviously, this translates literally as "package file" or "container file". Is this the same as a "ZIP file"?

Thanks

check data

Explanation:
'kolliaineisto' might actually refer to 'check data' or 'sample data' as 'kollata' is a colloquial form of the verb 'tarkastaa". Does this make any sense within the larger context?

Any chance of asking the client? Otherwise, 'package file' is generally translated as 'pakettitiedosto' and 'zip file' as 'Zip-tiedosto'. Good luck!

Asker: Thanks for your suggestion, Pietari. This could be the meaning in this context but it's difficult to know for certain as there is insufficient information!

neutral  Ville Kilkku (X): Sounds plausible, not enough context to be sure though. Definitely better than "ZIP file" though, because "kolli" is only used of physical packages in transportation context and is not used to mean "package" in IT context at all.

disagree  Owen Witesman: There are established translations of check data (you mean check sum, right?), and this ain't they. Since this is IT and thus should be plastered all over the web, they are just making this up. Ask the client or translate nonsense to nonsense literally.

package data, packaging unit data

Explanation:
This is, to be honest, a wild wild guess.

Finnish word 'kolli' has two meanings: 'tomcat' (obviously not referred here) and 'package', 'packaging unit'.

If a company delivers different kinds of goods in different amounts, it surely has different kinds packaging units (like cartons of various sizes) and then it also maintains data on them.

This it is imaginable that in some stage of processing it is checked that a file contains data on packaging unit.
