French term or phrase: verre étamé
Hi again!
DOC: 1907 Museum catalog of ancient Egyptian mirrors.
CONTEXT: Les miroirs en ***verre étamé*** n'apparaissent pas avant l'époque chrétienne, sans toutefois qu'on puisse affirmer qu'ils soient dus à une influence étrangère.
My author later uses "miroir étamé" & "glace étamée", which am pretty sure = "tin-plated mirror"
I found: Speculum is a tin-copper alloy containing 33 to 50% tin, that can be polished to a high degree of reflection.
I found "verre étamé" as "ground glass", an abrasive, as well as "mirror glass".
I found solid info for "speculum bronze" (high tin level, highly reflective, but brittle).
But am not sure of this use. None of these phrases Google well:
tin-plated glass mirror, mirror made of speculum metal/alloy, speculum metal mirror.
Does anyone know what English equivalent for "verre étamé" could work here?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
