Thank you very much for the reference. I have only skimmed it, as I haven't time to read it carefully, but I've made a note of it for future reference. As a lover of both Proust and Vermeer I am very interested.

I went to see the View of Delft in The Hague a few years ago. I stood in front of it for at least 20 minutes; I couldn't tear myself away. It is utterly enthralling, for reasons one can't immediately understand. Unfortunately the Girl with a Pearl Earring was in Japan on loan: a big disappointment.

While doing some research on the "pan de mur" of your question, I came across this site: http://www.essentialvermeer.com/proust/proust.html#.XRPTButK... . The article discusses a "petit pan de mur jaune" mentioned by Proust in the "La prisonnière" volume of his Recherche. The article translates "petit pan de mur jaune" as "little patch of yellow wall", which does not really fit your context and is, therefore, not useful in this case. However, I did read the entire article and found it fascinating. It is worth the time, at least if one is not occupied with project work.
