I am translating a dissertation from France. The subject matter is related to cancer research. The author uses this word in several medically related indications and I have found that the English word "failure" is sometimes an appropriate translation, but I am not sure it would fit in all instances. Below is context. I have placed the specific terms in question at the beginning of the context, numbered 1, 2, 3.

Douglas Hanahan et Robert Weinberg présentaient six caractéristiques fondamentales communes à tous les cancers. (B) En 2011, les deux auteurs publient une mise à jour de leur article synthétique en prenant en compte les dix années de recherches écoulées. Dans cette publication, l'échappement immunitaire est considéré comme l'un des « hallmarks » émergents.
