As mentioned in my earlier discussion post, which I deleted while trying to update it!, this is a very interesting question and it would be a shame if it and Liz's "answer" did not appear in the glossary. PS Liz, please don't take it personally, but could you also post as an answer your helpful contibution to the question I asked about meningitis (same reason as Nicky) :-) Thank you!

Great find, particularly for the confirmation of the use of the "remonte" as a POW camp, as mentioned in Nicky's text.

Sorry you couldn't access the plan. I've had the same problem with Google Books references posted by others. It seems that access may depend on where you are; although I'm using the UK version I'm doing so from Spain. Google is full of disconcerting anomalies of this kind.

Nous avons déjà eu l'occasion d'annoncer la démolition de la " Remonte ", cet important bâtiment voisin de la rues des 29è et 35è Divisions Libératrices - après avoir été camp de prisonniers - où de nombreuses sociétés reprirent de l'activité au lendemain de la guerre.
L'intérêt que les vieux Saint-Lois portent à la Remonte peut sembler exagéré - sinon puéril - aux jeunes générations. Ils ignorent sans doute - et pour cause - que ce dépôt recevait autrefois les chevaux achetés par l'armée.
En 1940, hélas ! la Remonte fut entourée de barbelés et devint un camp de prisonniers français.

I agree with that. Even today it's not exactly a stud farm; it's on the outskirts of Saint-Lô and looks a bit like a stately home in a smallish park. But this refers to when it had the "remonte" next to it, and as the 1828 plan in my source shows, it was in the town centre and was just a building adjoining a large square.

I agree with Liz and Charles except that I don't think "stud farm" is right. Just "national stud" is better as a stud isn't necessarily a "farm".

Exactly; that's what I had in mind; the "haras" part must be included. I envisaged adding "attached to the national stud", but I think you could reduce it to "stud farm".

Basically agree with Liz and Charles, but I think you need to say 'stud farm remount depot' to be precise.

I hope Liz will post her reference entry as an answer, because I think "remount depot" is precisely what you want here. "Remonte" refers to the dépôt de remonte adjoining the haras (national stud) in Saint-Lô. Here's a book with a plan showing the position of this dépôt in 1828, when the stud was at one end of the Place du Champ de Mars; it mentions "les services naissants de l'État (gendarmerie, armée, garde nationale, remonte militaire)".

So it was a military facility: in other words, what was called a remount depot in Britain:

So this was the army remount depot attached to the national stud.
