English translation: s.l. - sensu lato

French term or phrase: un projet s.l.
L’expérience a montré dans diverses parties du monde que les projets de LCD s.l., petits ou grands, sont voués à l’échec à court, moyen ou long terme

The "s.l." is in italics in the text. Does this mean "société limitée" in this context, and therefore we're talking about a project set up as a business rather than a more traditional NGO structure?
I'd be pleased to have your insight. Thank you.

English translation:s.l. - sensu lato
Explanation:
It's Latin meaning "in the broad sense".

I had this exact same abbreviation last week, together with "s.s." - sensu stricto - in the strict sense
In both cases the abbreviations were tagged onto the end of the name of geological research projects

I am unsure whether the translated form would be widely used in English, so my own solution was to expand it to the full term

Definition of sensu lato

: in a broad sense —used especially with names of taxa to indicate that the name is used more inclusively than sanctioned by current practice Pyrus sensu lato includes pear, apple, quince, mountain ash and related forms — compare sensu stricto

LCD (firm) s.l. : sine loco ohne Ortsangabe

Explanation:
I think s.l. rather refers to the firm and less so to the Projects.

and in case LCD is to be understood as la Lutte Contre la Désertification, s.l. could allthesame be interpreted as sine logo, since no mention is made as to where the Projects will be carried out .
