French term or phrase: Aides de droit commun
Hi everyone,

This term has me stumped.

The full paragraph is:

Are these universal benefits?

Thanks
Nick

General disability benefit/s and allowances
Explanation:
I don't recall this plethora of 'aides' from the Swinging Sixties.

Recours de droit commun: ordinary remedy >

Droit commun: general, ordinary or existing law > Bridge.

Though UK translation agencies wonder why use of the term by many into-ENG translators and court interpreters is problematical, the term of 'Common Law' denotes the Anglo-Am or 'Anglo-Saxon' system of law, the law prevailing within the British Commonwealth or contrasting with criminal law. state disability benefit/s and allowances

Explanation:
I would have said that if all disabled people are eligible for such aid, then it is probably "state" aid.

disagree  Daryo: true, but that's not their defining characteristic, not what makes them "de droit commun"
8 hrs
-> Is "general" the defining characteristic of "de droit commun" then as you agreed with that answer? You are being pig-headed yet again

neutral  ph-b (X): "state"? Local governments may also pay benefits provided for under ordinary/general law; would that still come under "state benefits"?
1 day 15 hrs
-> "state" or government aid if you prefer includes local government of course

common law assistance

Explanation:
Aids are assistance, help or support.
Common law is English law established by court decisions rather than by statutes (statutory rights) enacted by legislatures.
Handicap refers to disability, impairment or disadvantage.

www.thefreedictionary.com/common law

In connection with compensation claims, assistance is needed in line with general statutory personal rights. In this example, however, common law is the key instead of general and personal statutory rights.

In the case cited it's in connection with workers who have a disadvantage, therefore the ordinary or common law of employment is relevant, not just state living allowances.
