Fraud Brigade or Fraud Squad wouldn't work because most fraud crimes are under the aegis of a different police brigade, the Brigade de Répression de la Délinquance Astucieuse (BRDA). That same link says that the BRDA "s’occupe quant à elle des abus de confiance, des escroqueries, des abus de faiblesse qui concernent principalement des personnes fragiles, des fausses écritures, des faux certificats, et des fausses attestations."

Misappropriation of assets is not investigated by the Brigade des fraudes aux moyens de paiement, but by the Brigade Financière. Fraudes aux moyens de paiements is not the same as Fraudes. In the UK the Fraud Squad can investigate misappropriation of assets (Occupational Fraud)

Asker: Thanks. Yes, it could be that. But what about the "Brigade des fraudes aux moyens de paiement (BFMP) ;"? (see https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigade_financi%C3%A8re ) - from that page it appears that the BF is a sibling organisation of the BFMP.

The "Brigade financière" is a section/department of the "Police judiciaire".
There are subdivisions as certain spepcialist knoweldege is required for certain types of cases, thus : (non-official site) https://www.police-nationale.net/sdaef/

"La Sous-Direction des Affaires Économiques et Financières (SDAEF) est une sous-direction de la Direction Régionale de la Police Judiciaire (DRPJ) de Paris. Elle a vu le jour le 2 octobre 2000, suite à la réforme du printemps 1999.

Cette dernière avait pour but de réorganiser la DRPJ au niveau de son état-major, et de redécouper ses divisions. La réforme avait également permis de créer des Directions de la Police Urbaine de Proximité (DPUP), et des Directions de l’Ordre Public et de la Circulation (DOPC).

La Sous-Direction des Affaires Économiques et Financières a ensuite fait le choix de regrouper ses différents moyens d’action par pôles de compétences. Cette décision avait pour objectif de lutter plus efficacement contre des formes de criminalité très variées comme les infractions au code des marchés publics, les trafics d’influence, la corruption, le blanchiment d’argent, les atteintes aux libertés publiques, ou encore les infractions à la législation sur les sociétés.

La SDAEF est finalement dissolue par Nicolas Sarkozy, avant d’être rétablie au moment de l’élection de François Hollande.

Elle compte aujourd’hui 7 brigades spécialisées :

la Brigade Financière (BF),
la Brigade de Recherches et d’Investigations Financières (BRIF),
la Brigade d’Enquêtes sur les Fraudes aux Technologies de l’Information (BEFTI),
la Brigade de Répression de la Délinquance Astucieuse (BRDA),
la Brigade des Fraudes aux Moyens de Paiement (BFMP),
la Brigade de Répression de la Délinquance Economique (BRDE),..."

@Asker. Note that the date of events relating to your source text will be relevant. The The "Police nationale" is no stranger to restructuring and reorganization of its services. Further, if this is Paris, there is sometimes an organisation that it specific to Paris, with certain units being present there that do not exist elsewhere.

@Asker. Rather than there being limits to seeking parallels etc., I would say that, as a rule, it should be avoided, unless a strict parallel can be drawn which is seldom than case. On your second point, note than "economic" and "finance" are not strictly speaking synonymous. ;-)

Asker: Thanks, great research. Yes, this is recent, and yes, this is Paris. Cyril's "Fraud Squad" led me to look that up, initially in Wikip. Interestingly, there it says that "The Fraud Squad is part of the City of London Police Economic Crime Department (ECD)". At this point we have to acknowledge that there will be limits to which we can identify one sub-department in the one country with a sub-department in the other. "Economic Crime Department" might however work quite well...
