French term or phrase: direction à vis et secteur
Description of a second-hand car, a vintage Italian FIAT (Ghia beach "Jolly").

"Conduite à gauche – Direction à vis et secteur"

There's a page here https://www.motorlegend.com/entretien-reparation/trains-roul... with a diagram in the middle of the page which some expert (Chris Collister? Tony M?) may be able to recognise.

I thought of something like simple like "rack and pinion steering", but have found no evidence to this effect as yet.

agree  Mélanie Wisbey (X): ha cross posts!

agree  Tony M: Yes, ideally hyphenated in GB EN, though the tendency these days is for EN-US to omit hyphens — even where they are sometimes useful for comprehension!
23 mins

agree  philgoddard: Strictly speaking it should be hyphenated, as in your first reference.

Explanation:
I hope this helps. I think rack and pinion is a different type, after reading the CDX article.
