French term or phrase: laisser passer les noyaux thermiques
I think I understand all the words here, but I just can't make any sense of them. What's actually happening?

En fonction de l’écart de température entre le thermique et l’air environnant l’ascendance peut accélérer ou ralentir. Elle peut aussi monter largement puis uniquement *** laisser passer les noyaux thermiques ***

The terms I've been using are:
ascendance = thermal, thermal lift, lift or rising air (depending on exact context)
noyau thermique = thermal core

So, the air in the thermal rises then lets the thermal cores pass through? Doesn't make any sense to me.

English translation:let only the central part rise
Explanation:
Not sure that the subject elle applies 100%, but I understand that either the thermal, all the thermal, and nothing but the thermal continues to rise, depending on the air around it, or that under some circumstances the outer part of the thermal and the inner part behave differently, with the outer part being slowed down more while the central "core" part rises faster.
