Museum visitors' guide so general text intended for the public. This is an intro to a section about "estampes" (prints - engravings, etchings, etc.).

Bien avant l’invention de la photographie, l’image reproductible existait sous la forme de l’estampe. Intimement lié à l’apparition du papier, ce procédé consiste en l’impression d’une image à l’aide d’une matrice en relief ou en creux.

Would this be a relief or intaglio matrix? Not my field so it's a bit of a guess.

I agree with BD's suggestion, but I don't think it conveys an instant image the way this does. A lot of people won't know what intaglio means.

I'd use the the word "surface", because I can't think of any other term that would include a printing stone, block or plate.
