French term or phrase: directeur d'ouvrage
Court case relating to intellectual property of some published graphic novels. AAA is the publisher, and BBB is the directeur d'ouvrage. It is claimed that they infringed the IP rights of another entity, CCC.

The term directeur de collection seems to be used synonymously, here at least:

editorial director/managing editor
Explanation:
I think this is more like it, because the source text is referring to his general role in relation to the company itself.

Went with "editorial director" in the end. This page https://thebookmaker.net/2016/06/16/profession-editeur-a-quoi-sert-un-charge-dedition-un-directeur-douvrages-ou-un-directeur-de-collection/#more-286 suggests that there *is* a slight difference from "directeur de collection", for which I gone for "collection director".

Directeur de collection is different I think -- series editor.

This is precisely what an editor does. Ref. the editor character (Fay Ripley plays her) in the last series of the UK show "Cold Feet".

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks ... series editor sounds nice/possible to me. I'm adding a discussion entry with a couple of links to explanations of "directeur d'ouvrage". One is a bit infuriatingly clever-cloggsy, in a very French manner, but the other might mean something to someone.

Copy Editors

Explanation:
Reading the https://jeanfabienauteur.wordpress.com/2015/04/21/le-travail...
one can conclude that the Book Editors give the manuscript to persons called "Directeurs d'Ouvrage" who will work together with the authors in order to assure the accuracy of the book.

I have searched the roles implied in a Publishing House and I found this:
"Copy editors work in various fields of media including newspapers, magazines, and websites. In book publishing, copy editors work with editors and make sure authors' manuscripts are clear of grammatical errors. While many copy editors work full-time, this career is also ideal for those looking for part-time work as many companies hire copy editors on an "as needed" basis."

Also:

"What Does a Copy Editor Do?
If you're a super speller and a great grammarian, and have a killer eye for details, this always-in-demand role could be the one for you"

"Are you fanatical about the use or non-use of serial commas? Does misuse of “their,” “they’re,” and “there” drive you insane? Does an article that vacillates between “10” and “ten” make your blood boil?

What exactly does a copy editor do?
Sure, copy editors correct misspellings (it’s “supersede,” not “supercede”) and whip grammar into shape (between you and me, don’t let a writer get away with “between you and I”), but there’s a lot more to it.

These grammar Svengalis are also charged with reviewing content for proper punctuation, usage and syntax; creating and/or updating in-house style rules; fine-tuning structure, tone and voice; and ensuring clarity, coherence and logical flow and consistency in words, typography, art and style.

“Style can include the specifics of any particular publishing company, as well as the type of guide being used, such as the Chicago Manual of Style,” says Ciara Larkin, a senior copy editor in book publishing at Thomson Reuters.

Some copy editors also function as proofreaders, fact checkers and even project managers who oversee workflow and communicate with other departments throughout the production process, Larkin says. Duties at some companies also include performing rewrites, writing headlines and reshaping leads."
