The following appears in a sociology text looking into the relationship between doctors and the pharmaceutical industry:

L’examen d’un patient par son médecin, dans un espace censé être clos et préservé par le secret médical, est souvent décrit, d’après un mot prêté à Hippocrate, comme la « rencontre d’une conscience et d’une confiance » au cours d’un « colloque singulier ».

The examination of a patient by his/her doctor, in a supposedly closed space protected by medical confidentiality, is often described, following a quote attributed to Hippocrates, as “the meeting between a conscience and a trust” during a "unique meeting" which creates the doctor-patient “unique relationship”.

The French term 'colloque singulier' appears to encompass the doctor-patient bond/relationship as well as the actual meeting, (and is actually attributed to Louis Portes not Hippocrates). The author goes on to coin a new term, 'colloque singulier préalable', to describe both the relationship and the meeting between medical visitors (from the pharma industry) and doctors which takes place before and determines the conclusion of the doctor-patient consultation. But I can find no succinct term that includes both the physical meeting and the ensuing relationship. I think that the concept of the relationship is more important than the meeting, so could I use 'prior unique relationship' for the doctor-medical visitor bond?

The concept of "doctor-patient confidentiality" derives from English common law and is codified in many states' statutes. It is based on ethics, not law, and goes at least as far back as the Roman Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians. It is different from "doctor-patient privilege," which is a legal concept. Both, however, are called upon in legal matters to establish the extent by which ethical duties of confidentiality apply to legal privilege. Legal privilege involves the right to withhold evidence from discovery and/or the right to refrain from disclosing or divulging information gained within the context of a "special relationship." Special relationships include those between doctors and patients, attorneys and clients, priests and confessors or confiders, guardians and their wards, etc.
