Manchot est un terme désignant les espèces de l'ordre des sphénisciformes. Ce sont des oiseaux marins de l'hémisphère austral, incapables de voler à cause de leur adaptation à la vie aquatique. L'espèce la plus connue, le manchot empereur, vit en Antarctique. Il est souvent confondu avec le pingouin (anglais razorbill, qui lui vole) notamment en raison de sa traduction anglaise qui est penguin, et en autres langues (allemand, italien, espagnol). Il existe 18 espèces de manchots, dont 6 sont appelées gorfou.

Le manchot est souvent appelé par erreur « pingouin » (de l’anglais penguin). Cette confusion de termes provient sans doute du fait que le tout premier « pingouin » rencontré par des Européens n’était pas un manchot.
Le manchot vit exclusivement dans l’hémisphère Sud, le pingouin dans l’hémisphère Nord.
Actuellement, il existe 17 espèces de manchots qui résident dans des environnements très variés. Le domaine du manchot d’Adélie ou du manchot empereur se situe dans l’Antarctique alors que l’on rencontre le manchot des Galápagos sous le soleil brûlant des tropiques.
