Le caractère auditable d’un rapport comportant des informations non financières implique l’existence d’une norme d’audit et donc la transposition des techniques d’audit à un tel domaine. À la suite des travaux de M. Power, J. Igalens (voir bibliographie) s’efforce de montrer que « la profession loin d’auditer la responsabilité sociale de l’entreprise s’est essentiellement efforcée de rendre l’information correspondante auditable ». Pourtant la vérification des informations non financières nécessite des compétences que l’auditeur ne possède pas traditionnellement (en matière d’environnement par exemple) ; c’est pourquoi il s’entoure de professionnels du domaine (ingénieurs…).
