Il est aisé de voir du cynisme dans l’idée que « les promesses n’engagent que ceux qui les croient » et de tenir pour des naïfs les électeurs qui ont d’abord cru à des promesses non-tenues, mais on peut aussi y voir l’expression d’une sagesse supérieure : qui est plus sage que celui qui sait bien que toutes les promesses ne seront pas tenues ? Et qui est plus honnête que celui, tout en sachant cela, donne son cœur et son énergie à la réalisation, même partielle, d’une promesse de campagne ?
