Au jour de son incorporation, le matelot reçoit son «paquetage» composé notamment de deux tricots rayés en coton, deux pulls en laine, une vareuse en drap, un pantalon à pont, une cravate noire, deux paires de chaussettes en laine, une paire de souliers, un sac de toile et une petite valise en métal. On lui remet également un bonnet, que l’on appelle familièrement un «bâchi». Le «bâchi» est une véritable icône, notamment car son aspect n’a guère changé depuis la fin du 19e siècle. Pourvu d’un pompon dont la tradition dit qu’il porte bonheur à celui qui le touche, il est également muni d’un ruban légendé amovible. Ce dernier permet d’identifier l’affectation du matelot.
