specimen/type examples Explanation: Although 'specimen' puts my teeth on edge, I believe it is appropriate for the (arrogant) attitude of the times |

type portrait Explanation: The term is used in this sort of context, e.g. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=tW7dNwfwkPcC&pg=PA98&lpg... and here: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=hj7eCQAAQBAJ&pg=PT117&lp... (sorry, theses are references to Google books, which won't let me copy the exact text). |

sogenannte Typenaufnahmen so-called 'Typenaufnahmen' (stereotypes) Explanation: Die fotografische Dokumentation beschränkte sich hier fast ausschließlich auf sogenannte Typenaufnahmen. The photographic records consist almost exclusively of so-called 'Typenaufnahmen' (stereotypes). 1) When a source text includes the qualifier 'sogenannte', it is logical to include the German source term. 2) The sentence already includes the concept 'photographische', hence it is unnecessary to convey the '-aufnahme' (= photo / portrait / mug shot) element, although one possibility would be visual stereotypes. 3) Choice of single or double quotes will depend on the target audience (British or American). |

anthropometric portrait Explanation: Ethnographic photography was a means of producing natives, but in the midst of colonial rule and the complicated contexts that this gave rise to, there was increasingly little evidence of a ‘pure’ native lifestyle. the Photographer cum administrator[...]tried to document what were described as disappearing cultures, of which Fig. 3 is an example. Portman produced a number of such anthropometric portraits https://goo.gl/UcE7CL plenty of relevant google hits for “anthropometric portrait”: https://goo.gl/LmrYm9 https://goo.gl/V73soU https://www.therai.org.uk/the-rai-photographic-library/photo... |
