Taken from an academic paper on the Italian art historian Vasari and his methods for collecting artworks:


This appears frequently throughout the article: e.g. 'Die Hinterholung mit dunklem Pinsel' and "die fehlenden Teile mit blauem Pinsel im Ton des originalen Zeichnungsgrundes ausgefüllt'

It seems to be what Vasari is doing to the backgrounds to the pictures he collects, modifying them to improve the main image. Would Pinsel translate here better just as 'colour' or 'shade' or would 'brushwork' be closer to the mark?
