German term or phrase: Kunstdenkmalinventarisation
A nice German compound word for ya... I'm a bit stuck on this one.

It's specifically about the city of Bamberg, which seems to be doing a research project into its cultural heritage... See here, for example: http://www.blfd.bayern.de/medien/denkmalpflege-informationen...

English translation:artistic heritage inventory
Explanation:
"Ein Kunstdenkmal bzw. künstlerisches Denkmal ist ein ortsfestes oder bewegliches, vom Menschen geschaffenes Objekt oder Teil eines Objektes, das insbesondere für den Bereich der Kunst oder ihrer Entwicklung eine kulturelle, historische, wissenschaftliche oder künstlerische Bedeutung besitzt, aus der sich ein öffentliches Interesse an seinem Schutz und seiner Pflege ergibt."

Many dictionaries give translations including the word "monument", but I think this is slightly misleading. As you can see from the pictures in my reference, it can include such things as statues and church doors.

"Cultural heritage" or even just "heritage" might be more accurate given the definition above.

agree  Kphred: "Art monument inventory" seems to be just as good. "Monuments of Arts" seems unclear. These are presumably works of art having monument status, such as statues, portraits, etc. of historic figures.

  -> Thank you, Kphred. Yes, allthemore so as the city of Bamberg is concerned where - as results from the linked provided stock taking is not limited to statues and smaller objects.

disagree  Berlitz US: Inventarisation was requested, not Inventar.
54 mins
  -> an inventory is not only a detailed, itemized list, report of things, but also the PROCESS of drawing up such a list; besides, I also suggested stocktaking. My advice:look before you leap.

disagree  Kim Metzger: No such thing as "monuments of arts" in English.

agree  Stephen Reader: Only, change 'monuments of arts' to 'artistic monuments', even tho' just possibly ambiguous?

agree  michael10705 (X): another possibility, even modifying a bit in wording to "cataloging of its artistic heritage" or similar, if the term "inventory" is not too appealing....

disagree  Berlitz US: Inventarisation was requested, not Inventar.

  -> They both mean the same thing in English and German, as Ellen has pointed out above.

I said "setting up" because the term is Inventarisation, not Inventar.

agree  Berlitz US: The other 2 disregarded the ending -isation, so those are out. Inventorisation doesn't sound so great in English, so setting up is a nice solution!
29 mins

neutral  oa_xxx (X): I get why but setting up doesn't work, this is nothing new but an ongoing process-having the full sentence would help us to know what verb could fit if needed
55 mins
  -> I think “setting up” can also refer to an ongoing process but I am happy to hold my breath until a better solution has been found :)

compiling a database of (the region's) architectural heritage

Explanation:
Berlitz makes a valid point about -isation. I think the most natural solution in EN is a gerund form (-ing).
I'm not too keen on 'inventory' - it suggests to me that the items are all under a single roof, i.e. in a museum or a warehouse.
I have borrowed Orla's terminology ('architectural heritage') which she has taken from the Granada Convention. 'Monuments' seems too restrictive (statues, obelisks etc), as does 'artistic' which would preclude industrial artefacts.

The NIAH was established in 1990 to fulfill Ireland's obligations under the Granada Convention, through the establishment and maintenance of a central record, documenting and evaluating the architectural heritage of Ireland.

Article 1 of the Granada Convention establishes the parameters of this work by defining 'architectural heritage' under three broad categories of Monument, Groups of Buildings, and Sites.

Monument: all buildings and structures of conspicuous historical, archaeological, artistic, scientific, social or technical interest, including their fixtures and fittings;
Group of buildings: homogeneous groups of urban or rural buildings conspicuous for their historical, archaeological, artistic, scientific, social or technical interest, which are sufficiently coherent to form topographically definable units;
Sites: the combined works of man and nature, being areas which are partially built upon and sufficiently distinctive and homogenous to be topographically definable, and are of conspicuous historical, archaeological, artistic, scientific, social or technical interest.
The Council of Europe's definition of architectural heritage allows for the inclusion of structures, groups of structures and sites which are considered to be of significance in their own right, or which are of significance in their local context and environment. The NIAH believes it is important to consider the architectural heritage as encompassing a wide variety of structures and sites as diverse as post boxes, grand country houses, mill complexes and vernacular farmhouses.

General reference-have only scanned it but thought this link looked interesting, inventory and Inventarisation are both quite standard in art-related fields and this newsletter is particularly about heritage inventories but as well as examples of usage there are other variations and alternatives in the running text.
